While several prominent institutions have opted for strict prohibitions, Dartmouth College President Sian Leah Beilock argues that banning AI risks making higher education irrelevant in an increasingly automated world.
Writing in The Atlantic, Beilock—a cognitive scientist specializing in performance anxiety—compares the current academic unease around AI to math anxiety. Her research indicates that fear of technology, much like fear of mathematics, is best mitigated through direct practice and structured exposure rather than avoidance.
The Case Against Campus Bans
The urge to restrict AI stems largely from concerns over academic integrity and real labor market disruption. Recent research from Stanford University reveals a nearly 20 percent decline in employment for young workers in AI-exposed roles, such as software engineering and customer service.
In response, several top universities have implemented strict bans. The UC Berkeley School of Law has barred students from using AI tools for drafting, conceptualizing, or editing coursework, while the University of Chicago Law School prohibited all screens from first-year classrooms.

Furthermore, entry-level positions in fields heavily affected by automation are seven times more likely to require high-level human capabilities, such as leadership, discernment, and ethical judgment.
Beilock asserts that higher education must focus on cultivating these distinctly human traits alongside technical fluency. Rather than shielding students from disruptive software, universities must equip them to evaluate, critique, and direct artificial intelligence effectively.
