Normally, the work behind an AI chatbot or processing huge amounts of data happens in a giant building — a data center — packed with computer chips and cooling systems. A company called Starcloud has a bold idea: what if you put those chips on satellites and let them float in space instead?

In space there's constant sunlight for power and a virtually unlimited supply of cold vacuum to help keep chips from overheating — two things data centers on Earth struggle with. Starcloud just raised another $250 million, on top of money it had already raised earlier this year, and investors now value the company at $2.3 billion.

Who's paying for this

A few well-known names took part, including chipmaker Nvidia (whose processors are the same type used in most AI systems on Earth), along with several venture capital funds. The money should help Starcloud build a bigger factory and finish its next, much larger satellite — nicknamed Starcloud-3 — which the company hopes to launch aboard SpaceX's giant Starship rocket.

Why rockets have suddenly become the bottleneck

Here's the twist: it's not so much building the satellites that's currently keeping Starcloud's CEO up at night — it's getting a lift to space. SpaceX is winding down its workhorse Falcon 9 rocket by 2028 to focus on the newer, larger Starship, and other rocket companies (like Blue Origin and Rocket Lab) haven't yet proven they have enough available launches to fill that gap. So even a company with billions of dollars can find itself stuck in line for a rocket slot.

Starcloud already has early equipment up there: the company says it's currently the only one flying a powerful Nvidia data-center chip in orbit, and it's working with Nvidia on a future chip built specifically to withstand the harsh conditions of space — extreme temperature swings, radiation, and the violent vibrations of a rocket launch.
