What Cloverleaf actually does
Building a new AI data center isn't just about buying computer chips and stacking them in a warehouse. Long before a single chip is installed, someone has to arrange a massive, reliable power source, find and secure the right piece of land, and handle all the unglamorous groundwork that makes a data center possible in the first place. Cloverleaf Infrastructure, a company founded in 2024, specializes in exactly that: it acts as a middleman connecting utility companies with the companies that want to build these facilities.
The deal
Nvidia — the company that makes the specialized chips most AI systems run on — has now taken a stake in Cloverleaf. The exact amount hasn't been officially confirmed, but reporting from the Wall Street Journal puts it at several hundred million dollars, and Reuters describes Nvidia's stake as a minority stake. Cloverleaf had already raised $300 million of its own ahead of this deal.
Why Nvidia is doing this
Nvidia makes enormous profits selling AI chips, and you'd normally expect a chip company to just sit back and sell to whoever wants to build a data center. Instead, Nvidia is putting more and more of its own money into the infrastructure side of things — the power hookups and site development that have to happen before a single chip gets installed. The company describes this strategy as a way to "keep the AI flywheel spinning": the faster new data centers get built, the faster demand for Nvidia's own chips keeps growing, meaning that financing the buildings indirectly finances Nvidia's own future sales.
Not a one-off move
This isn't Nvidia's only recent bet in this area. Just days earlier, Nvidia announced a separate $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, an Ohio data center project linked to OpenAI. Together, these deals show Nvidia moving further "upstream" — investing in the raw ingredients of power and land that data centers need — rather than waiting on the sidelines for customers to build their own data centers and then come buy chips.
