Meta's new Mac app lets you talk to your computer instead of typing

What the app does

Meta has released a Mac application built around its Meta AI assistant, and its main feature is system-wide voice dictation — meaning you can speak out loud in virtually any app on your computer and have your words typed out for you, instead of being limited to one specific program. That puts it in the same category as existing dictation tools like Whisper Flow and Superwhisper.

Beyond simply transcribing speech, the app can also look at what's currently on your screen and answer questions about it, using one of Meta's own AI models built for understanding images and screen content.

The business side of the release

Alongside the Mac app, Meta also rolled out new features aimed at small business owners. If you link your Instagram, Facebook, and ad accounts, plus your Google Workspace apps like Gmail and Google Docs, Meta AI can answer questions about how your marketing campaigns are performing and who is actually engaging with your content. It can even look at publicly available information about competitors to help you compare. From there, it can help draft documents, presentations, and spreadsheets on your behalf.

Why Meta is doing this

Meta's leadership has been pushing the idea of selling AI "agents" — assistants that can take over routine, repetitive business tasks — as a major growth opportunity for the company. This Mac app and its accompanying business tools are part of a broader push in that direction, following earlier steps to bring similar AI agents to WhatsApp and Instagram for business use.
