Pollen Robotics, the French hardware startup acquired by AI platform Hugging Face last year, has seen rapid demand for its latest product, the Microduck. The $399 programmable, duck-shaped personal robot surpassed 10,000 unit sales within days of launch, generating over $4 million in revenue and pushing expected delivery times past initial Christmas 2026 targets.
Beyond its early commercial success, the device illustrates how intertwined global hardware ecosystems remain. Despite originating from a French-American AI firm, the Microduck relies on the RK3566 system-on-chip from Shanghai-listed Rockchip, which builds its architecture using IP licensed from British semiconductor designer ARM.
Global Supply Chains Drive On-Device AI
The hardware choice reflects an expanding market for localized compute silicon. According to Lian Jye Su, chief analyst at research firm Omdia, Rockchip serves as a key vendor for on-device AI applications, particularly machine vision tasks such as object detection and image recognition.
Rockchip recently reported a 40% year-on-year revenue increase for the first half of the year to 2.88 billion yuan ($428 million). However, Su noted that while Rockchip chips have a broad footprint, they are designed for standard edge tasks rather than complex generative AI models due to compute limitations. Processing logic directly on-device allows small robots and mobile hardware to run functional AI models without sending user data to cloud servers.
Open-Source Consumer Hardware
Weighing 800 grams (1.76 pounds), the Microduck functions as both an interactive desktop toy and a developer platform. Powered by open-source software, the robot is built to learn behaviors through virtual simulations and goal-directed instructions.
The launch marks Pollen Robotics' second hardware platform, following an earlier robot model that also exceeded 10,000 units sold. The sales surge comes alongside reported interest in Hugging Face itself; recent reports from The Information indicate Nvidia agreed to acquire Hugging Face in a $12.9 billion deal, though neither company has officially commented.
Growing Momentum in Personal Robotics
The strong reception for the Microduck coincides with broader market activity in accessible robotics. Chinese startup Zeroth recently launched a child-sized humanoid platform priced at 8,888 yuan, built around virtual simulation training. Meanwhile, Mondo Robotics raised more than 80 times its initial funding target on Kickstarter for a mobile, autonomous camera robot priced starting at $549.
As open-source software aligns with lower-cost edge hardware, entry barriers for developer-focused consumer robotics continue to fall.
