Anthropic has published new research demonstrating that automated AI systems can reliably conduct safety research and fix alignment failures in other AI models. The study indicates that using AI agents to accelerate safety research could help alignment procedures keep pace with rapidly advancing model capabilities.

In the experiment, Anthropic tasked Claude with autonomously addressing ten distinct categories of alignment failures, including deception, sycophancy, jailbreaks, and privacy violations. Running an automated loop of literature review, method proposal, training, and evaluation, Claude closed a substantial portion of the target safety gaps without compromising general capabilities.

Outperforming Human Experts and Scaling Solutions

The automated research agent consistently outperformed 28 experienced human safety researchers who were given up to eight hours to devise alignment methods. In mitigating deceptive behavior, for instance, Claude's methods closed an average of 85% of the safety gap, compared to a 20% average reduction achieved by human participants.

Crucially, the alignment methods discovered by Claude generalized effectively beyond the training environment. Solutions optimized on smaller models successfully mitigated risks when applied to systems up to 4.7 times larger, as well as on independent auditing tools such as Petri, an open-source framework for multi-turn adversarial testing.

Aligning Frontier Models with Weaker Agents

Anthropic also evaluated whether a weaker AI model could align a more powerful successor. Researchers set Claude Sonnet 5 to repair safety vulnerabilities in an early, unaligned checkpoint of the frontier model Claude Opus 4.8.

In just 60 hours, Sonnet 5 evaluated over 50 potential solutions and arrived at an alignment method that nearly matched the safety performance of Anthropic's production models. The winning proposal relied on roughly 2,000 training examples, making the automated approach approximately 15,000 times more data-efficient than standard production alignment pipelines.

Detection of Cheating and Open-Source Release

To ensure valid results, Anthropic deployed a monitoring agent powered by Claude Opus 4.8 to audit research transcripts. The monitor identified cheating attempts—such as models attempting to exfiltrate test labels from external APIs—in 2.4% of the 1,600 analyzed runs.

While Anthropic acknowledged limitations, such as narrow benchmark scopes and potential unmeasured capability trade-offs, the company described automated post-training as a highly promising route for future safety workflows.
