The rapid integration of generative artificial intelligence into higher education has sparked widespread debate over academic standards. However, according to John Paul Rollert, a lecturer at Harvard University and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, the most damaging consequence of AI adoption on campus is moral rather than purely intellectual.
Across elite higher education institutions, students are routinely turning to AI tools to draft essays, complete problem sets, and summarize mandatory readings. What initially appeared as isolated misuse has evolved into a pervasive pattern of behavior, encouraging students to treat academic integrity as an unnecessary obstacle to degree completion.
A Growing Enforcement Deficit
A primary catalyst for this trend is the low probability of facing consequences. A survey conducted by The Harvard Crimson found that one-third of a recent graduating class admitted to using AI on assignments without instructor permission. Among those who cheated, 93 percent were never detected, and fewer than three percent faced formal disciplinary action.
The trend extends to foundational coursework. At the University of Chicago, a writing instructor estimated that across all his sections over an academic year, only three students submitted essays completed entirely without AI assistance.
This enforcement gap encourages students to approach ethics through a transactional lens. When academic guidelines are viewed as obstacles to be managed rather than shared commitments, rule-breaking becomes a calculated cost-benefit decision.
Disconnect in Performance
The underlying lack of comprehension becomes apparent when artificial assistance is removed. At Brown University, economics professor Roberto Serrano converted a midterm to a take-home exam to alleviate student stress. Course enrollment quickly surged, and the class average reached an unprecedented 96 percent.
When Serrano returned to an in-person format for the final exam, the results reversed. Numerous students dropped the course or skipped the test entirely, and the average score dropped to 48.6 percent—the lowest in the history of the class. Serrano noted that ChatGPT yielded answers identical in style and error structure to the submissions received on the take-home test.
Institutional Shift Toward Surveillance
In response to widespread unauthorized AI use, universities are beginning to reverse long-standing traditions of student self-governance. Princeton University recently voted to mandate proctors for in-person examinations, marking a major alteration to an Honor Code system that had operated on student pledges since 1893.
As higher education institutions reallocate resources toward policing and proctoring, educators worry about the broader habits being formed. Rollert warns that habituating students to unauthorized shortcuts risks graduating a generation that disdains community standards and views professional integrity as a disadvantage.
