In the town of Ellendale, North Dakota, the arrival of a data center provided the resources needed to repair streets and renew public facilities. A similar picture can be seen in Richland Parish, Louisiana, where investments from companies including Meta have generated additional government revenue. In Quincy, Washington, fiscal proceeds from the tech sector have contributed to the construction of educational facilities and a decline in local poverty rates.

Energy costs and water use

A recurring point of debate is the strain on the electrical grid and fears of rising energy rates for consumers. According to analysts, the picture is more nuanced: because data centers are large-scale power buyers, they substantially contribute to utilities' fixed network costs in many regions, which can lower the relative cost per household.

To protect consumers from potential price increases, policy initiatives such as the Ratepayer Protection Plan under Donald Trump aim to ensure that tech companies themselves bear the cost of the necessary infrastructure expansions.

A technological shift is also underway in cooling. While earlier studies pointed to high water consumption in server cooling, modern data centers are switching to closed-loop cooling systems. Representatives of hardware manufacturer Nvidia emphasize that this is sharply reducing daily water use at the newest generation of facilities.

Opportunities for small businesses and skilled workers

Beyond the impact on municipal finances, AI infrastructure is affecting the broader labor market. Small business owners are gaining access, through affordable AI applications, to analytics tools and software that previously required large budgets.

At the same time, the physical construction of the facilities is driving demand for skilled workers. Electricians, technicians, and construction professionals in particular are seeing sharply increased demand for their work, leading in many regions to a rise in employment and wages in the technical sector.
